All is Vanity by Charles Allan Gilbert is an amazing optical illusion illustration from 1892 (first published in Life in 1902). It depicts a woman sitting at her vanity, gazing into a mirror while simultaneously appearing to look like a human skull. Gilbert was making the point that all of our earthly pleasures are transient and fleeting. It’s so true, and still… I’ve always wanted a luxurious vanity just like this lady.
