Much like a birth doula, an end-of-life doula is a non-medical professional who provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals and their families as they navigate the dying process. Rather than taking the place of other positions, doulas are team players and support all health care teams. The role of an end-of-life doula is to focus on the holistic aspects of this difficult time and foster peace and meaning.

The two largest differences are the ample amount of time we are able to spend with each client, and the fact that the doula role is a non-medical position, focusing on important and nuanced holistic care. Doulas work wonderfully as a supplement to the medical system.

Doulas do not lead the care or make medical decisions. Rather, they are there to support and guide you.

Heron’s Flight works with those with a life limiting illness as well as their caregivers and loved ones. It is never too early (or too late) to incorporate this important support into your life.

My mother is buried on a hill that overlooks a creek. At the very beginning of her funeral service, I noticed a beautiful heron soar down as if standing watch. Being that the funeral was such a devastating and surreal (yet so real) experience, I took comfort in the calm presence of that heron. As soon as the service concluded, the heron opened her wings and took off into the sky. Her flight was so elegant, confident, and peaceful. Since then, herons show up right when I need them most.

You do not need to be spiritual or religious in order to hire a doula. Heron’s Flight is respectful of all belief systems.
